There is something deeply restorative about a garden in high summer. The warmth of the sun on your shoulders. The gentle hum of bees weaving through wildflowers. The scent of herbs carried on the breeze. A quiet bench beneath an old tree where the world seems, for a moment, to stand still.
At Chapel House Estate, these moments are woven into the landscape. Our gardens are not simply designed to be admired; they are lived in. They nourish our restaurant, inspire our chefs, provide sanctuary for wildlife and create a place where every season tells a different story. From the orchard heavy with fruit to the flourishing kitchen garden, every corner reflects our belief that the most beautiful landscapes are those that exist in harmony with nature.
Normally, these gardens are reserved for our guests. But once a year, we invite others to experience them.
As part of the National Garden Scheme, Chapel House Estate opens its gates for a special summer afternoon, welcoming visitors to wander through the estate at their own pace. It is a rare opportunity to discover the landscape beyond the hotel, to explore pathways that meander through wildflower meadows, admire the abundance of the kitchen gardens and pause to appreciate the quiet beauty that defines life here. This is not about rushing from one feature to the next.
It is about slowing down.
Taking time to notice the butterflies resting amongst the blooms. Listening to birdsong echo through the orchard. Watching gardeners carefully tending the beds that will soon supply the restaurant with the freshest seasonal ingredients. Finding a moment of stillness beneath centuries-old trees.
These are the details that often become the most memorable part of a visit.
The gardens have always been at the heart of Chapel House Estate. They shape our menus, influence our approach to sustainability and create the backdrop to celebrations, weekends away and everyday moments of calm. Opening them to visitors is a chance to share a place that means so much to us while supporting the remarkable work of the National Garden Scheme, whose garden openings raise millions each year for nursing and health charities across the UK.
To complete your afternoon, enjoy homemade cakes and refreshments in Thorne Barn, browse a carefully curated selection of plants, or linger a little longer with lunch in our restaurant, where many of the ingredients have been harvested just a short walk from your table.
Some places are designed to impress.
Others simply make you feel at home.
We hope you’ll discover that Chapel House Estate is a little of both.
